Let’s talk about what five actually is. When you heat water, the dissolved calcium and magnesium in it separate out and cling to metal surfaces. You’ve likely seen this white or yellowish crust on your faucet aerator or the inside of a tea kettle. The same thing happens inside your coffee maker, especially on the heating element and in the water lines. As this scale builds up, it acts like insulation, so your machine has to work harder to heat water. That’s why you notice slower brewing and weaker coffee, because the water isn’t reaching the right temperature to extract all those delicious flavors from the grounds.
The descaling process is straightforward. First, check your coffee maker’s manual for any manufacturer-specific instructions, because some machines have a descaling cycle built in.
